“Explain algebra” leaves a tutor with a large task. “I can subtract five from both sides, but I do not know why that is allowed” gives the conversation a clear starting point.
Personalized help begins with making the question specific.
Show the point of confusion
Share the problem and the step you have already attempted. Include the instructions your teacher gave when they are relevant, but leave out names, student IDs, or other private information.
You might ask: “This is how we were shown to begin. Can you explain why the next step works?”
Ask for a change, not just more words
If an explanation does not help, say what you need changed:
- Define an unfamiliar term.
- Use smaller numbers in an example.
- Explain one step at a time.
- Ask a question before showing another step.
These are ways to steer a conversation, not guarantees that an AI response will be correct or suitable.
Try the reasoning yourself
Set the explanation aside and make another attempt. Check the result against a reliable class example. If the method conflicts with your teacher's instructions, ask about that difference rather than assuming the AI is right.
